COURSE OBJECTIVE
Whether working in the field of quality, environment, or health and safety, the auditor's job is to obtain complete and accurate information about specific company activities, make judgements on this, and pass relevant information on objectively, without colour or bias.
Given this job description, the successful conduct of an audit requires that the auditor is an effective communicator. Communication skills are demanded in:
· Establishing a rapport with the person being audited, to remove any feeling of conflict or confrontation;
· Gathering audit evidence, by reading, observation and interviewing;
· Giving concise and effective feedback on audit findings.
This course aims to equip auditors to meet these demands. It has been written for auditors, by auditors, and hence the focus will be on applying these skills in commonly encountered audit scenarios.
At the end of the course, delegates should be able to:
· Promote good communication with management and operatives during an audit;
· Recognise causes of communication breakdown during audits, and respond constructively to these;
· Question and listen effectively during interviews, to elicit required information and put auditees at ease;
· Present feedback on audit findings in an objective and accurate manner.

COURSE CONTENTS
The course involves a combination of tutor lectures and practical exercises with feedback sessions. The exercises are designed to engage delegates in situations where they can practice communication skills, and hence learn from doing, rather than simply receiving information.
The course can be divided into two main components:
1. Discussion on principles of communication:
· Tutor / delegate discussion of content and basis of communication during standard audit stages
· Introduction to principles of good communication, and some examples and effects of poor communication during audits
2. Practical sessions in interviewing skills, where awareness and practice of good
technique will aid audit conduct.
SUGGESTED PRE-REQUISITES
The communication skills required of auditors are the same whether they work as internal or external auditors, and the course is suitable for those involved in either, or both, of these roles.
